Shri Santosh S. Lad was born on 27 February 1975 into the distinguished family of Shri Shivaji V. Lad and Smt. Shailaja S. Lad in Bellary. From an early age, he exhibited a natural aptitude for leadership.
He pursued his schooling in Sandur, completing both his primary and secondary education there, and went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree.

In 2002, Shri Santosh S. Lad began his political career as a member of the Sandur Municipal Council. In the 2004 general elections, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Sandur constituency, thereby entering the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

In 2009 and again in 2013, Shri Santosh S. Lad was elected for consecutive terms as the MLA from the Kalghatgi–Alnavar constituency in Dharwad district, marking his third successive victory. During this period, he served as the Minister for Information and Public Relations as well as Infrastructure Development in the cabinet of the then Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah.

In the 2023 general elections, Shri Santosh S. Lad was once again elected from the Kalghatgi–Alnavar Assembly constituency. He subsequently assumed office as the Minister for Labour in the government of Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah.
